Abilities Network, a multiple year Baltimore Sun Top Workplace, is looking for a part-time hybrid Mental Health Specialist (24 hours per week) to support Project ACT. Project ACT provides training to over 6000 early childhood professionals per year. The Mental Health Specialist’s primary responsibilities are to provide practice-based coaching and early childhood mental health and behavior consultation to early childhood professionals in child care programs, preschools, Head Starts, and Family Child Care homes to prevent the expulsion of children age birth to five who have experienced trauma or are demonstrating a need for mental health support.

Key responsibilities and functions may include, but are not limited to:

• Support children’s social emotional development, promote the inclusion of children with special needs, and address behavioral challenges using a reflective coaching model and trauma informed practices.
• Observe childcare settings and children in order to develop a written support plan for individual children containing strategies for behavior change with the goal of preventing expulsion and promoting social emotional competencies.
• Assist classroom staff in implementing strategies through reflective coaching, on-site modeling, training sessions and other supports as needed. Address children’s mental health needs through a consultative model, providing referral to direct therapeutic services when needed.
• Utilize research-based cognitive/behavioral strategies to facilitate behavior change.
• Provide psychoeducation and reflective supervision to Project ACT’s consultation staff.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have the following education and experience:

Minimum Skills and Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology or Counseling with relevant licensure or certification (e.g. LCSW, LCSW-C, LCPC, BCBA).
• Must have experience working with young children with challenging behaviors, mental health concerns, trauma histories, or developmental disabilities.
• Must have a minimum of 4 years of experience working with children ages birth to 5 years, experience in childcare programs preferred.
• Must possess strong professional presentation skills.
• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Must have transportation as needed to fulfill the duties of position.
• Must have availability and flexibility to work some evenings and weekends. Occasional overnight travel may be required.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

• Coursework in curriculum and child development
• Fluent in Spanish
• Additional experience working with older children
