Title: Project Scientist

Project Scientist is responsible for completion of field surveys for microbial, asbestos, lead, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), PCBs, and industrial hygiene projects. Must be conscientious at recording observations, sample locations, and sampling methodology. Project scientists are expected to work independently in varying environments including offices, manufacturing facilities, residences, abandoned buildings, and in the outdoor environment. Communicating effectively, working as part of a team and interacting appropriately with other employees, contractors, and clients is a key requirement of this position. The Project Scientist will be expected to perform job tasks including proposal preparation, client and regulatory communications and meetings, subcontractor oversight, contracting, budgeting, field surveys, workplace monitoring, assessments, note taking, data review, manage projects, and report writing.

Responsibilities:

• Complete duties as assigned by Division Manager. Duties may also be assigned by other Atlas Managers including Branch Manager and Project Managers based on company and branch needs. Follow project directives and standards as communicated by Atlas Project Managers.
• Adhere to Atlas programs and training including safety requirements and Atlas directives and standards, including all related policies.
• Follow established industry best practices and standards for each type of work task.
• Communicate in an effective and professional manner with co-workers, managers, contractors, subcontractors, and clients.
• Meet project deadlines as communicated by the Project Manager.
• Conduct asbestos sampling surveys in accordance with federal, state and local regulations.
• Provide asbestos abatement oversight services including assuring that the contractor removing the asbestos-containing materials is following current regulations and the approved plan. This may also include assistance with bid walks to provide contractor information regarding the abatement project.
• Conduct air sampling during asbestos abatement oversight including perimeter air sampling / monitoring during abatement and clearance sampling, visual and air, after completion of the abatement project.
• Conduct XRF lead-based paint surveys in accordance with federal, state and local regulations.
• Conduct IAQ surveys including visual survey, moisture mapping, air sampling and interacting with office occupants to conduct interviews regarding symptoms, complaints, odors, etc.
• Conduct Microbial Remediation oversight including oversight of contractor activities, moisture testing and clearance air and surface sample collection after visual clearance.
• Conduct air and/or surface sampling as part of an industrial hygiene survey including visual survey of work environment to identify hazards and chemical usage using normal basic industrial hygiene practices and methodology. Sampling may also include monitoring for noise and other physical stressors in accordance with standard industrial hygiene practice and methods.
• Perform and collect field measurements during industrial hygiene surveys using a variety of monitoring and sampling equipment that has been properly calibrated.
• Keep detailed, accurate and complete notes for ALL surveys and projects including information necessary to write reports and to allow client to replicate sample if necessary. Notes must be complete and legible allowing others to complete reports if necessary.
• Use, maintain and calibrate survey equipment including assuring that equipment is ready to use.
• Complete reports based on the Atlas templates. ALL reports must be reviewed by a manager prior to being delivered to the client and should be sent to the Manager as a complete report ready to send after the review.
• Assist with other Building Science projects as assigned. Cross-training with other projects is expected with industrial hygiene tasks being the priority.
• Review and write reports detailing the background, methodology, results and professional recommendations
• Be a technical lead for junior staff.
• All other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

• Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree with 5-10 years of experience. in performing comprehensive industrial hygiene related surveys and assessments.
• Current VT & NY Asbestos Inspector, Asbestos Designer, Supervisor, Project Monitor and, Field Analyst certifications are preferred. Must be maintained for duration of employment.
• Current VT & USEPA Lead Inspector and Lead Risk Assessor certifications are preferred. Must be maintained for duration of employment.
• Flexible, detailed-oriented professional who enjoys working in a team environment and who is proficient working unsupervised.
• Willing to work off hours and weekends occasionally.
• Current 40 Hour OSHA Hazwoper training preferred.
• Experience with building systems and/or construction.
• Knowledge of basic industrial hygiene methodology, instrumentation and practices.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal and electronic communication skills.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and AutoCADD is preferred.
• Strong planning and organizational skills.
• Technically adept, flexible, and forward thinking.
• Knowledge of industry best practices and standards for the outlined work tasks.
• Ability to succeed in a fast-paced consulting environment, handling multiple project assignments, meeting strict deadlines, and traveling to client facilities as needed.
• Willingness to receive guidance and mentoring for growth opportunities.
• Willingness to mentor and work with technical staff to complete projects in a timely and efficient manner.
• Must be physically able to lift 50 pounds, navigate uneven terrain independently, use ladders/stairs, and wear appropriate personal protective equipment including respiratory protection.
