Communications Strategist

Fugees Family, Inc. is seeking a driven communications and marketing professional to support our organization during a time of significant national growth. This full-time position is in-person and located in Columbus, Ohio. Some remote work may be required.

Overview:

Fugees Family, Inc. is looking for a high-performing self-starter to serve as the Communications Strategist for the Fugees Family, Georgia Fugees Academy Charter School, and future Fugees Academy sites. The Communications Strategist is a key member of the Headquarters team, working closely with the development, operations, and program staff to create and develop constituent-facing program and project documents, engaging fundraising proposals, impact reports, stewardship communications, and other written collateral in support of comprehensive and rapid growth efforts. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Communications Strategist also works closely to support the articulation of program and project descriptions, objectives, and expected impacts. Occasionally, the Strategist will draft personal correspondence at the executive-level in service of the CEO.

Often serving as the principal writer for the Headquarters team, the Strategist supports projects and opportunities involving individual donors, institutional foundations, promotional materials, and general assignments. Primary projects include supporter emails, content brochures/program leave behinds, and all social and digital media communications.

As Fugees Family prepares for rapid growth, the Strategist also ensures all communications are consistent with Fugees Family’s established theme, brand, design, content, and delivery guidelines. The Communications Strategist will be integral to helping us build a community that can help fuel growth while also raising awareness about refugee-related issues. Through this work, the Strategist will make a direct and lasting impact on educational equity for refugee and English Language Learner students, as well our organizational culture, expansion, and stewardship—flipping the script on the United States Education system. Our student body represents nearly 40 different countries, including Burundi, Iraq, Central African Republic, and Burma. Our staff are nearly as diverse as our students, with 80% identifying as BIPOC.

Over the next few years, the organization has a strategic plan to continue growth and launch Fugees’ education model across the nation, serving the needs of the growing refugee and immigrant population in the U.S.

Key Responsibilities:

• Drive strategy for Fugees Family’s external communication channels, primarily social and email campaigns, with the goals of raising awareness, growing the community, and raising funds for the organization.

• Work with development and operations teams to document objectives, expected impact, and related narratives for Fugees Family programs, projects, and fundraising priorities; create compelling and timely content about the organization’s work.

• Develop a marketing calendar and project plan to ensure effective strategy implementation.

• Draft content and manage the engagement of the organization’s social media channels including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Youtube. This occasionally includes the CEO’s personal pages.

• Develop cadence, focus and copy for email campaigns, and manage distribution through Constant Contact (help migrate potential transition to new platform).

• Draft op-eds and thought leadership articles in collaboration with our CEO, tapping into broader global and national conversations about refugees, immigrants, and education in America.

• Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people, including staff, donors, and partners or otherwise inside and outside Fugees Family.

• Ability to gather information through interviews, database research, Fugees Family publications, etc.

• Serve as a co-writer/editor for important deliverables, including grant applications and annual reports.

• Develop other communications collateral and language as needed.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• 2-3 years of experience in a communications-focused role, either with an organization or at an agency.

• Demonstrated outstanding writing, editing, and proofreading skills, including ability to prepare materials in various mediums for different audiences, purposes, and communication channels.

• Ability to “ghost write” for Fugees Family senior leaders..

• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and produce high quality results within designated timeframes; work effectively both collaboratively and independently; ability to pivot when priorities change.

• Highly digital and social media savvy.

• Self-starter who knows how to get things done

• Strong work ethic, positive attitude, and comfort working in a very high-paced and dynamic environment.

• Solid organizational and administrative skills with high attention to detail.

• Diplomacy and sensitivity to different cultural situations.

• Commitment to values of integrity, collaboration, humility and candor.
