*Teaching & Learning Math @ Latin*
The curriculum and practice of teaching mathematics at Latin aims: to communicate their understanding of ideas and concepts, to apply previous knowledge and skills to develop new understanding, to prepare students to collaborate with their peers, to use technology thoughtfully to enhance their understanding; not replace it, and to develop an appreciation for the beauty and utility of mathematics.
There is no such thing as a “math person.” Everyone is capable of learning mathematics. Students learn best when they are active and engaged participants in classroom discussions and activities, when they are allowed to wrestle with new ideas through complex and challenging problems, and when they are provided opportunities to reflect on their learning.
Mathematics is a subject of interconnected ideas. Students are best served when they explore these connections. Successful problem solvers demonstrate perseverance and resiliency in their attempts. Everyone experiences problems that they are unable to solve at first. Learning occurs when students apply new and creative approaches after their first attempt was unsuccessful.
Students should view mistakes as opportunities to reflect on how to further and refine their understanding. Students benefit from seeing multiple approaches to solving a problem or understanding a concept. The process and understanding that leads to a solution are more valuable than the solution itself. To that end, teachers expect students to articulate how they arrived at a solution. Students are best prepared for future success when they focus on conceptual understanding versus memorizing procedural steps that resulted in a solution.
The first priority of the teacher is to create an environment where learning can occur: where all student voices are respected and heard, where mistakes are valued as opportunities for learning, and where students seek to improve the understanding of others as well as themselves. The role of the teacher in the learning process is as facilitator. Teachers create space for learning by presenting students with robust problems that allow for rich discussions. Finally, teachers assist students in reflecting on their learning by providing feedback for students on their strengths and areas for growth.
