We are looking for a Supervisor – Site Labs to assist in the day to day operations of the Minerals and Metals Laboratories. This role is a great opportunity to work for a global mining organization and further develop your technical skill set.

Reporting to the Superintendent – Site Labs, and working in a collaborative community, you will be:

• Responsible for direct supervision of laboratory employees and deployment of equipment to meet production and safety requirements in own area of responsibility. Manage a team of sample technicians by coordinating and supervising the day-to-day activities of the team. Coordinates work activities with the other supervisors, engineers, and areas. Presents proposed solutions/results to peers or project team members. Plans, schedules, directs, and coordinates routine workflow and projects to meet completion timeframes and plant requirements.
• Providing assistance to plant supervisors and engineers on a daily basis.
• Training Laboratory technicians and chemists
• Scheduling and verifying the calibration and maintenance of equipment and instrumentation.
• Developing and implementing analytical methods.
• Interpreting analytical data for accuracy and trends, along with raw data and results and document accordingly. Will utilize analytical methods, standard operating procedures, and laboratory data systems to ensure data integrity, compliance, and good laboratory practices. Will lead method development, validations, and certification activities for the analyses and instrumentation in their work area. Laboratory analyses utilized are classical and instrumental (XRF, LECO analyzers, PSA’s, titrations, water quality meters, etc.).
• Lead the quality control and quality assurance programs of the Concentrator laboratory, by leading proficiency testing, routine audits, trouble shooting, and continuous process improvements. This may include preparing quality control samples such as round robin samples, analytical standards, duplicates and spikes.
• Prepare standard operating procedures (SOP’s), standard work instructions (SWI’s), job safety analyses (JSA’s), and risk assessments for areas of responsibility.
• Solves problems based on best practices and experience.
• Makes decisions which are guided by policies, procedures and the business plan.
• Evaluates training, progress and results through observations and auditing.
• Recommends changes in procedures or objectives.
• Conduct payroll and employee relations activities.

What you’ll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

• Extensive understanding of Laboratory Standards and Procedures
• Demonstrated competency in calibration of equipment and instrumentation and the ability to troubleshoot instrumentation issues and method QC failures while applying data integrity and good laboratory practices. This includes assisting in developing new methods of analysis and commissioning of instrumentation while understanding, interpreting, and adapting existing methods to improve data accuracy and precision.
• Knowledge of sample preparation techniques for instrument analysis
• 2-3 years of prior leadership experience and the ability to develop level of understanding of problem-solving and participation among team.
• Effective communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
• Lead peers in development and act as a resource for other employees within the laboratory.
• Utilize logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems in work area.
• Ability to Lead Root Cause investigations and initiate corrective actions as required.

It will also be beneficial if you have:

• Chemistry Degree or related field
• Strong troubleshooting skills for analytical challenges
• Experience with method development
• Previous laboratory leadership experience

Where you’ll be working

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States.
