The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is seeking applicants for a Transportation Maintenance Worker at the Adrian Garage located in the MDOT University Region. You will perform a full range of maintenance, repair, and preventive maintenance on state trunkline roads and right of ways.
Do you currently have to buy your own personal protective equipment or tools? Come work with us at MDOT and all personal protective equipment, tools, and equipment are provided to perform all the duties as assigned to this position. This position requires you to maintain an appropriate CDL and endorsements; once employed by MDOT, the renewal costs are reimbursable. This position also receives $300 clothing allowance annually and a steel toe boot reimbursement every year up to $100 or every two years up to $200. Employment with MDOT also offers paid vacation leave, sick leave, and 13 paid holidays each year!

Experience
Transportation Maintenance Worker 6
No specific type or amount of experience is required
Transportation Maintenance Worker 7
One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6 with experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking.
Transportation Maintenance Worker E8
Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 7; or, one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level.
Transportation Maintenance Worker 9
Three years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker E8.
For any level above the TMW 6, the MDOT’s Statewide Work Element Coordinator must approve satisfactory completion of the MDOT’s TMW Work Element training and certification program.
Some positions may also be assigned duties that require the application of pesticides that may require certification or registration as a pesticide applicator in compliance with Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) regulations.
Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Criminal and driving records will also be checked if applicable. The pay rate provided to the preferred candidate will be dependent on the level in which they are found qualified. New employees typically will be quoted at the minimum rate of pay for the level in which they are found qualified, and their pay will increase in increments based on evolution to the next level and satisfactory performance.

Leave Time
Full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 vacation days per year. Employees also receive 13 sick days per year and 8 hours of leave to participate in certain school functions or community activities. Employees may also qualify for up to 12 weeks of paid or unpaid leave for certain family or medical situations.
Holidays
State employees receive 12 or 13 scheduled paid holidays each year, including New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day.

Insurance and Other Benefits
Eligible employees can choose from a variety of health insurance plans, including a PPO, HMOs, and a High Deductible Health Plan with HSA (effective January 1, 2021). Other coverage includes vision, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance, as well as tax-deferred Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) for health, prescription, dental and vision eligible expenses, dependent care expenses, and Qualified Transportation Fringe Benefits (QTFB). Employees also have the option to purchase additional life, accidental death, and long-term care insurance, auto/home insurance, identify theft protection, and legal services.
Paid Parental Leave
Provides eligible individuals up to 12 weeks of paid leave immediately following birth or adoption of a child.
Deferred Compensation
Employees may invest income in a tax-deferred retirement investment program. The state offers two optional deferred compensation plans, the 457 and 401(k). Employees decide the amount deducted from their paychecks.
Retirement
Employees receive a minimum 4% state contribution toward their retirement fund. If an employee elects to contribute more, the state will match up to 3%. The Office of Retirement Services administers two different retirement plans for State of Michigan employees: Defined Benefit (DB) and Defined Contribution (DC). New hires can also receive up to a 2% employer match into a Personal Healthcare Fund and a lump-sum credit to a tax-deferred account if eligible.
